The Cheapskate’s Guide to Starting Pointed Pen Calligraphy

By on May 12, 2017
cheapskates guide to pointed pen calligraphy

The title pretty much says it all, yeah? ? Though I have hoarder tendencies (especially when it comes to art supplies), I also have this compulsion to canvass each and every piece I wanna buy to see if there’s a cheaper alternative, or if it’s sold cheaper somewhere else. This way, I have been able to procure much of my stuff at less cost than if I’d gotten them, say, from the mall. Mostly though, I do my shopping online so it’s much easier to research and compare prices. That, and there’s basically none to be found here in the province. #promdifeels

Anyway. Pointed pen calligraphy or dip pen calligraphy is something I only started doing pretty recently. I am obviously no expert here; I only speak for my limited experience and basic knowledge as a fellow newbie. Without further ado, here are the basic things you need to start:

All I Ask

All I Ask

Trigger warning: This is one of my most personal posts ever.

This is one of Adele’s many heart-breakingly beautiful songs. I can’t listen to this without feeling its emotional pull, never mind that I never was in the song’s exact circumstance.

But I almost was. Though my guy and I have been together now for more than a decade now, there was a time before when I honestly thought everything was over between us. Had we not gotten back together, I would have been literally singing this song with matching tears and snot. It would have hurt that bad. Why? Allow me to tell you one of the most painful parts of our story…

The Beauty of the Bullet Journal

By on April 21, 2017
BuJo boring week

As an average blue-collar worker in a sleepy city, my days are not exactly filled to the brim with all sorts of exciting activities. While I do have my share of kinda remarkable days, most weeks I struggle to find anything of value to write on my BuJo. I admit though that I have been kinda slacking off since last month. Since then I have not done any lettering challenges or such. Add to that the fact that I now have a separate art journal, and my little BuJo is left on a semi-dry spell.

But the truth is I don’t really have to try hard to write anything. With regards to my BuJo, I am accountable to nobody but myself so if I don’t have anything to put in, then so be it. And that really is the beauty of the bullet journal. As personalized and as customized as it is, thus it is subject to the whims and fancies of its specific users. It could be as simple or as complicated as you wish it to be. So it could go from jam-packed with colors and activities one week, then all monochromatic minimalist the next. The important thing is to just keep writing, somehow. 😉

DIY Calligraphy Ink

DIY calligraphy ink

When you live in the province away from dedicated arts supplies store.. you gotta improvise if the material you want is unavailable. In this case, it’s calligraphy ink. I have a coupla small jars of sumi ink but given their non-availability in my immediate vicinity, they seem far too precious to waste on practice and drills. But I need ink to practice anyway, so what do I use?
