Let’s see. How do I start this? A brief explanation of the photo (even though it looks pretty much self-explanatory): I was looking at yoga poses earlier when I saw the Salamba Sirsasana (supported headstand). I’ve always wanted to learn how to do it so I looked for tutorials on YouTube. And so I came across Cassie Ho’s Blogilates channel and this video:

And excited creature that I am, of course I just had to try it at once. The wall beside the bed was just about perfect as support. And as I started trying to get my butt up in the air, of course my spunky daughter just had to try it too. With youth and more flexible joints to her advantage, coupled with grit worthy of an Olympic medal, she was able to do it first before I could. And then did it again and again until she got to this almost perfect form in the photo.
As for me? Fortunately, I was also able to do it a few times, though only for a few seconds at a time. And all that blood rushing to my head has left me with a slight throbbing headache until now. Tsk. But that won’t stop me from trying again and again in the coming days anyway. 😉
Anywho. I just learned how viscerally powerful are actions as models for kids to follow. They just really do as we adults do. Whether it’s yoga or running or simple behavior, kids just tend to mimic what adults around them say or do. And it’s an intense pressure to be what we want them to be. Who says only kids need to grow up? It would seem that adults, especially parents, have the greater need to before the kids actually do. So if I want a fit and healthy kid, I gotta be a fit and healthy mom first. If I want a kind and responsible kid, I gotta be a kind and responsible mom first too. Oh, the pressure.
Love this post man. <3 Head stand! 😀
Thanks dude! Headstands FTW! 😀
Oh wow! You found Cassey Ho and Blogilates! 🙂 I’ve been following her videos for two years now, although inconsistently haha. I don’t think I can do headstands anytime soon. I get headaches very easily. Kudos to your brave girl for attempting a headstand. I wouldn’t even dare do that when I was her age. 🙂
I’ve actually seen Blogilates mentioned in your blog a few times, but never really paid it any attention until now. 😛 I have downloaded the Blogilates app, but have yet to bust my ass in any of her workouts.
My girl’s fearless in some aspects, timid in others. Just like any regular kid, I guess. She just happens to be into physical exertion and exercising–she even likes dancing to Zumba videos sometimes. 🙂
Tried doing a head stand, it was hard! But when I was a kid, I remember doing it effortlessly and without fear!
Ah, the perks of the limber body of youth. Really makes me feel old and decrepit sometimes. Haha. But thankfully, I am not too old to do supported headstands yet, so yey! 😀
I just imagined myself doing a headstand while reading this, and OHMY,I felt dizzy. lol
I love the meaningful thoughts you shared here, I am so guilty of being a not-so-good role model to my kids. There were many times I find myself YELLING at my kids to “STOP SHOUTING”. How ironic! (Sorry kids!)
OH, THE PRESSURE talaga!!
Same here! That’s why it really was a new thing for me, even though I’ve technically been a mother for more that 3 years already. It only just sank in that I really have to be the role model for her. Like, whoa!
Wow, being able to do a head stand even for just a few seconds is amazing to me. I have never tried it but I know it’s difficult. Haha! But your parenthood insight is really spot on. Parenting is really such a great responsibility. Our kids are watching us all the time so we really gotta be careful of what we say and do.
Thanks Janice! It feels good knowing other moms could relate to my sentiments about mother/parenthood. 🙂
I’ve been practicing yoga on and off but I don’t think I can ever do a headstand XD
I used to think I couldn’t do headstand either, but then I came across Jessamyn Stanley on IG and was like:
I’d love to get back to yoga. I felt less tired and more flexible!
Really? I haven’t tried really doing yoga–dunno where to start with the poses and everything. I just really wanted to do a headstand and it happened to be a yoga pose. 😀
I’m fascinated with headstand, too, but unlike you, I don’t think I can do it. I guess I’m not that young and adventurous anymore to try stuff like that. I might break my bones. Lol!
