I actually woke up in a not-so-nice mood, having been heavily affected (yet again) by my mother’s worrying last night about some odds and ends that I thought were already done and over with. Add to that my (sorta) disagreement with him during the later part of the evening, which was actually a by-product of my reaction to Mama. So I had a pretty lethargic start of the day, with clouds seeming to hang over me despite the hot, bright sunlight burning throughout the day. 😐
Things finally started looking up after I had a couple bites of chocolate. No kidding. I have read all sorts of stuff about chocolates releasing endorphins (a.k.a. happy hormones) and all, and I am proven time and again (whether physiologically or psychologically, I can never be sure) that it really does work for me. It took about half an hour for the happy hormones to kick in, but when it did I did feel much much better and my overall perspective (for the day at least) much brighter. 🙂
I was able to do a certain task I’ve forever been putting off. And needless to say, I feel pretty good about that. I was also partially inspired the e-book I am currently reading, The Chocolate Diaries by Karen Scalf Linamen. Yes, chocolates again. 😉 I was not able to read it much during the weekend as I originally planned, but I was able to catch up a bit today. So far I am enjoying it and I can’t wait to finish so I could make a review and get another free e-book from Blogging for Books. 😀
Speaking of e-books, that got me interested in e-readers. Following my reawakened love for reading, it seems to be the answer to my reading dilemma of wanting new (not literally, since I read all sorts of books, even classics) books but not wanting to actually purchase books due to lack of storage for them after finishing the story. That, and the fact that reading e-books on a laptop’s LCD screen can be quite straining on my my already damaged myopic eyes. So in a burst of giddy hope, I am now aiming to own one before the end of this year. Sort of a birthday+Christmas gift to myself. 😉
Right now I am eyeing the Amazon Kindle Wireless. It is the most affordable portable e-reader I have seen so far, going for as low as P6,500 (the one with ads) on eBay.
Another e-Ink reader I found is the Nook Simple Touch Reader from Barnes & Noble. Just like the Kindle, it has a 6″ screen. However, it does away with the [physical] keyboard as it is actually a touchscreen. This makes it a bit pricier than the Kindle, the lowest (and actually the only listing) being P8,300 on eBay.
On a somewhat related note, I am also aware that Apple’s very own iPad 2 can be used as an e-reader too in addition to its slew of functions as a tablet. And that it can run both Kindle and Nook readers as apps.
Tempting, yes. But for my intended purpose as an e-reader, I would have to pass. It is an LCD after all, and eyestrain is an issue for me that’s why I wanted an e-Ink reader in the first place. Otherwise, I still lust after it as a gadget in its own right. 😛
I do plan on reading as voraciously as I did before with whichever e-reader I am gonna get, that’s why eyestrain is such an issue for me. Yes, I missed reading that much! So in the end, the choice really boils down to one of these two babies:
Each has its pros and cons, but I have plenty of time to deliberate. Just the same, which do you think should I get? To those who have either (or even both!) e-reader, care to give me some valuable feedback? 🙂
As a satisfied Kindle user, I’m gonna say go for the Kindle Though the Nook’s touchscreen feature is tempting …
An iPad is great to have but as you said, the LCD screen makes the reading experience uncomfortable.
There are a lot of good reviews for Amazon’s kindle in terms of customer service, sis. The thing that makes me wonder though is why the term customer service always comes up. Is it because the consumer finds there’s always something wrong with the gadget to seek the help of the CSR’s? Hmm…
I’ve been eye-ing kindle as well. I usually figure out what I need and make do with a gadget that doesn’t have any other special feature. That way, I get what I paid for. Plus, I’ve only seen kindle, it really looks like paper.
I still use a phone that can just call and text.
So that’s 3 votes for the Kindle already. Thanks for the feedback girls! 🙂 I admit the Nook’s touchscreen is tempting, but it seems there’s a larger range of free e-books for Kindle than for Nook. Yeah, this early I am already on the lookout for books I am planning to download. 😀 Excited much? 😉
I hope you feel much better today sis. It’s such a nice day outside 🙂 I’m actually out of the house right now. Anyway, we have this Amazon e-reader at home. I’m not sure if it’s the same model though. It is my mom’s. When she bought it, she thought it was an electronic organizer. I don’t think she understood that it was something else ^_^ It’s now just lying around the house.
Thanks sis, I do feel much better today. 🙂 That is probably a Kindle you have there, just cannot be sure about the model. But if it looks like the photos in here, then it probably is a Kindle 3. They’ve been around for almost a year now. Use it sis, ako ang nanghihinayang para sa gadget nyo! 😛
I’ve been wanting to get Kindle. Only thing holding me back is it doesn’t have a backlight for reading in the dark. Cheer up, things always gets better with chocolate 🙂
Visiting you from GT!
The Twerp and I
Chocolate is indeed a veritable pick-me-up anytime! 🙂 Regarding reading in the dark with the Kindle, you could probably buy third-party book-lights from National Bookstore or even CD-R king. I know I’ve seen some there. 🙂 Thanks for visiting!
Get a kindle, get a kindle! and if I may suggest sis, if you are planning to buy it from ebay, make sure to ask the supplier when they did purchase it from amazon. So that you’ll know if the one year warranty still applies. Sometimes kasi, kindles “freeze” on the screensaver. Mine did and I even wrote it in my blog. But the good thing with Amazon is that they have great customer service. They replaced my kindle since it’s still under warranty (we bought it directly from Amazon) and they shipped it for free. They even gave me another charger, so I actually have 2 now. I don’t think Barnes and Nobles cater to customers outside US so you won’t be able to rely on them when something happens to your Nook.
I say Kindle is still the best gadget to have for a great reading experience. You don’t really need to have a touch screen when you’re reading. If you like other things to do, then get a tablet. 🙂
By the way sis, I know you said you wanna join me for the 30-day blog challenge. I’ve been busy lately and have been experiencing some technical difficulties (dsl cable busted) so there have been no updates on my blog. So since it’s been a while already, I’m thinking to have the blog-a-day challenge for the whole month of August. So far there are three of you who wanted to join so all in all there will be the four of us in the challenge. I’m gonna blog about the details soon. If you’re still in, just drop me a line okay?
Gosh, sorry for the long comment. Feels like I’ve written a whole blog here. Anyway, goodluck on finding the best e-reader. I’ve got lots o ebooks I can share with you. 😉
Thanks for the comprehensive feedback sis! 🙂 Will definitely be keeping your advice in mind when I get my Kindle (in a coupla months or so pa nga lang 😛 ).
Oh, so that’s why you’ve been MIA from the blog circuit for some time time now.. Anywho, glad you’re back! And yeah, do count me in for that blog-a-day challenge. 🙂 Will be waiting for more details in your blog.
