It’s been a while since I posted about coffee shops here in Batangas. And it shames me to admit that while I intended for that to be part of a blog series, I have not made even a single follow up. *hides face* To remedy that ~somehow~ here are a coupla reviews of other relatively new coffee shops in Batangas City that I like: Kaffeine Café and Mary Laine’s Cafe.

Truth be told, I have been meaning to blog about this café for about half a year now. I even took the requisite pics for it. But then life happened–and my phone’s memory card got corrupted. ? And so my blog plans got delayed..

Until now. Anywho. The coffee shop ambiance manages to be both hip and cozy, with contrasting neutral colors, geometric fixtures and hand-lettered design details. There’s a semi-private little nook off to the side with a couple of couches, perfect for intimate conversations or when you’re wanting some solitude with your cup of coffee. Another plus: the staff are friendly and helpful enough to answer questions regarding the menu (bestsellers, amount of food per serving, etc.). They play John Mayer songs too, which is a great bonus. 😉

I have been to this coffee shop several times, and one thing I always, always get is a cup (or two) of their yummy hazelnut latte. I would seriously take it over a cup of Starbucks anytime–and it doesn’t hurt either than it costs just half of the popular coffee chain’s similar beverage. A double win in my book. ?

The food are pretty good, at par with offerings from other similar establishments. The price is just right too. I have so far tried only the carbonara and soda chicken rice meal, and they both satisfied my palate and tummy. Oh, and the nachos & fries too, which is good for sharing.

All in all, I recommend this coffee shop as a good place to chill out over a cup of coffee, or have some light snacks or full meal. You get a nice, chill vibe with your food and/or coffee without breaking the bank. What’s not to like? 🙂

Though only opened October last year, Mary Laine’s seems to be quite a popular hangout already judging by the number of its FB page‘s likes and check-ins. And it’s not hard to see why: (1) the food is pretty good, (2) the price range is on the more affordable side, and (3) the interior just screams artsy-cute overload.

There’s a variety of sitting options in this coffee shop. There is the standard square table and chairs inside and out the shop, and then a couple of couches and love seats, and even a low table with floor cushions. Adding to the cozy vibe are the hip bookshelf (shaped like a stack of upside-down coffee cups) filled with books of different genre (mostly YA), dreamcatchers on the wall, and a table containing various board games, coloring books and colored pencils. You’re spoiled for choice of activities so you don’t get bored while waiting for your food. There’s even a corner with assorted knick-knacks for sale (including, ironically enough, bottled Starbucks frappes ?).

For a hundred pesos, you can already avail yourself of a full meal here–even less if you’ll have only service water as beverage. ? Their pasta are good, served with the requisite garlic toast. My favorite is the Tuna Carbonara. My kid always goes for the Pork BBQ rice meal (you may want to request for less fatty pieces of BBQ though). And my folks default to the crispy Lechong Kawali rice meal (which takes forever a long time to cook, but is well worth the wait anyway).

Their iced tea and lemonades, served in cute bulb jars, go for P25 per serving. They also have coffee and freak-shakes (those humongous blended concoctions heaped sky-high with sweets like chocolates, candies, etc… you get the drift). I just haven’t tried them since my companions are always kinda on a rush to get home after the meal. Oh well. Next time… because there will definitely be more next times for us at Mary Laine’s. ?

  1. I really like the interior of Mary Laine’s Cafe, you can see how much passion the owner has put into the design to make their customers feel cosy, just like home. The food choices also sound very interesting, I have never heard of a tuna carbonara before. I would like to try that out. The hazelnut latte from Kaffeine Cafe must be delicious as well. I never go to Starbucks because I don’t like the amounts of sugar they put in the coffee, I always prefer small independent coffee shops which offer the real authentic coffee.

  2. Wow! i never thought batangas has this kind of cafe. I hope Kaffeine Café was near to schools so students can relax after the day. Mary Laine’s Cafe is definitely a place to visit and unwind from its ambiance. I’ll visit this place once i get back to Batangas. 🙂
