A long, long time ago I used to blog for the mere fun of having somewhere to rant and vent as much as I want without anyone censoring me or my thoughts…

why blog?

What now? While my posts are, safe to say, still all my own thoughts and what-not, there’s another new factor that is insidiously starting to affect my blogging mojo:

0414 WP weekly stats

I don’t know about you guys, but there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing my blog widening its reach so to speak. I felt vindicated creating a Facebook page, sharing posts on Google+, joining groups and forums. Getting visitors, views and comments became something of an addicting, must-have-more, how-else-do-I-syndicate drug. *hangs head in shame*

What do I really get out of it anyway? At the end of the day, nothing really. At least, nothing tangible. I don’t get paid to review stuff, there’s no monetary bonus for topping last week’s number of views and PR people aren’t exactly lining up at the door to give me freebies. Bitter? A bit, maybe. Like when I see other blogs with all these sponsors and yet the quality of the blog posts themselves are nothing to write home about (pun intended). But that’s just me and my bitter, snobby alter-ego speaking. 😛

Now, I really have nothing against those who do monetize their blogs. In fact, I admire them for getting something concrete for all their efforts. But then I see some personal blogs becoming more and more “commercialized” and I think, no, that’s not what I want my blog to become. At the end of the day, I value my creative freedom to write about whatever strikes my fancy whenever I want to. It’s going back to why I started blogging in the first place.

That aside, there are other perks to blogging. Like meeting like-minded people I would otherwise never have known if not for this big old blogosphere. Or finding a new perspective on a stale issue. Stuff like that, you get the drift. 😉

Bottom line, I really should STOP minding the blog stats so much and just write. 😛

  1. What is addicting to me is to see where my readers from and find out you have regular reader “silent” or “not”. I’m not sure about monetizing my blog yet because first, no sponsors knocking on my blog’s door yet but you’re right here Nathalie, we just need to keep on writing and what interests us the most.

    1. I don’t really pay much attention to where my readers are, though a quick glance reveals that most are from within the country. Not really surprising, since I blog mostly about local stuff. Either way, I will just keep on writing just for the sheer fun of it. 🙂

  2. i must admit i get jealous sometimes of other bloggers who earn from their blogs, but at the end of the day what matters most is i get to do what i want. earning from it is just a bonus ‘ika nga 🙂 just keep doing what you’re doing and everything else will follow 🙂

    1. True! One must never lose sight of the reason why s/he blogs. Everything else is secondary to the satisfaction of {somehow} coherently putting thoughts into writing. 🙂
